The Public Transport Report 2021

Who would have ever predicted that we would live through times like these?

2020 presented public transport professionals around the world with enormous challenges and uncertainty. 2021 offers hope that we can soon move from 'crisis' to 'recovery’ mode, but what will that recovery look like?

We teamed up with UK magazine Passenger Transport to ask the public transport community - including many well-known industry leaders - what they think.

We asked how they feel about the Covid experience, the future of the transport sector and the role data and technology will play. The results expose the very real challenges and concerns they face. But they also reveal remarkable levels of optimism.

The results expose the very real challenges and concerns they face. But they also reveal remarkable levels of optimism.

• Public transport professionals give their own sector an eight out of ten rating for its response to the Covid crisis.

• Operators changed schedules an average of seven times during the pandemic. More than two thirds said the rate of changes had at least trebled.

• The Covid experience has left positive legacies such as enhanced cleaning regimes and accellerated adoption of data and technology.

• 46% expect patronage to grow beyond pre-pandemic levels by by 2030. Only 35% believe it will be lower.

• 66% think efforts to acheive net zero are likely to lead to policies that constrain car use and promote public transport.

The full survey results - including comments from key industry figures - are published in our latest eBook, The Public Transport Report 2021.
